Lets damn well act like it.
Its widely publicized that “Conservatives” for a long time have detested the notion of the PC Nation and Trump supporters flock in droves to his speeches in part because he’s against political correctness. This article by Ben Bransetter outlines the convenient way railing against PC culture is simply a feint to allow offensive speech which draws voters out of the racist woodwork.
Ben rightly identifies Trump is flirting dangerously with becoming another clear historical example of why “PC Culture” exists in the first place and why its abandonment is troubling, but stay with me here as I try to outline why decrying politeness and characterizing it as a quashing of the truth needs to be turned on its head.
It is sad to note that blue collar Americans all over the country have fallen into Trump’s strongman demagoguery, Facebook is replete with lamentations that if only they had better information, if only they truly had a yearning to really understand instead of yelling at the closest out-group.
Its sad that they find Trump’s brand of rhetoric is one that resonates with a truth as they see it. But. Perhaps its time to stop fretting about the situation these people find themselves in and address them en-masse in exactly the same manner Trump is.
Tell them the un-varnished truth; you’re ill informed, incurious and being played.
The major problem is obviously this type of messaging, talking down of course, is always going to be met with hostility (almost like calling Mexican immigrants rapists causes Mexican immigrants to protest Trump rallies)
Nobody but the in-group actually likes an absence of political correctness.
But seriously this is exactly what is needed and it needs to be labeled appropriately. In any conversation with a Trump supporter, every nugget of rebuttal needs to be prefaced with …
“Let me be politically incorrect for a moment ….”
“Mexicans take our jobs” – Ok, they are hired illegally and payed a pittance and abused by a company breaking the law. Its not the immigrants fault; its usually a US based company that needs to be charged.
You can’t denigrate a race of people simply because of your own country’s broken immigration system and lack of a guest worker program worth anything. We cant just “send them back” we have to enact comprehensive reform which takes into account that our economy currently “needs” cheap labor. (thats a whole other fuckball can of worms)
“Climate Change is a hoax / power grab / liberal bullshit” – You’re conditioned to think this because you cant think critically for yourself.
Basically your ignorance and deference to an authority that “sounds good” because its an archetype of your in-group, free of verifiable fact, is fully disabling this species as a collective from acting on this problem.
Would I love climate change to be a hoax ? You bet your lifted Chevy I would, but you see I have this thing called innate scientific curiosity and you don’t, until you learn the basic tenets of the scientific method and actually read and *comprehend* a scientific paper or two, please sit down and shut the fuck up.
“Muslims are here to destroy our country” – Followers of Islam make up about 0.9% of the population of the US. Islam has been present here since at least the revolutionary war, if they’re here to kill us all and kidnap our wives to be ISIS slaves they’re doing a pretty shit job.
Meanwhile we actually have destroyed quite a few Muslim countries, the power vacuum we left in Iraq for Sunni and Shia to fight over aided in the creation of the ISIS shitstorm currently ripping apart the middle east. Sit down and STFU.
“This is a Christian nation” – This is my favorite so I’ll whip out the Sit down and STFU right up front, sitting comfortably ? Then I’ll begin. This country was not founded by typical southern baptists, it was founded by a diverse group of men some of whom where influenced by Deism.
Christians they may have been, but of the enlightened (dare I say “liberal”) kind, perhaps free from the shackles of fire and brimstone. They realized the blood that soaked European shores for centuries was spilled largely in religiously motivated conflicts, that a government (or Monarch) sponsored flavor of religion was a mechanism too open to abuse and discrimination.
Further doubt that the Unites States is not a Christian nation should be assuaged by, what else but the First Ammendment to the Constitution of the United States. Refered to by Thomas Jefferson thusly:
“Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”, thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.“
And then of course the point can be reinforced by the wording of part of the Treaty of Tripoli:
“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.“
(basically, we’re not England, no crusades based on religious beliefs, don’t worry. Well that worked out didn’t it ? isn’t oil a religion ?)
Ok, if that hasn’t disabused you of the idiotic “Christian Nation” bullshit (just because ~70% of people in this country claim to be Christians….) I can outline very simply why even if you are a Christian you don’t want government sponsored Christianity: Would it be Baptist ? Revivalist ? Unitarian ? Lutheran ? Snake Handlers ? Yeah, good luck deciding, I’ll be over here practicing whateverthefuckIwant which is how it should be.
“Bernie supporters just want free stuff!” – No, we simply believe in a more equitable distribution of the capital that we ourselves as a nation build through labor and taxes and insist that those at the top are taxed accordingly through things like the capital gains tax.
Of course its your dream to sit atop a stack of money and have its interest taxed less than actual labor income, but while you’re working your ass off, complaining at the state of the roads, hospitals, national infrastructure, education and the economy, somebody up there is laughing at how there’s not a chance in hell you’re making it to where he is. And he’s probably wearing a toupee.
Trump supporters need to be called out on this shit basically. If you say repeatedly you despise political correctness, then the adverse affects of its absence should be shoveled back at you, you poor misguided fools, you need to be told and demonstrated exactly how you are a fool, first one to yell “Elitest!!!” loses.
